The town of Ajax is part of the Greater Toronto Area, and is about 25km East of Toronto City. It has a population of somewhere around 90,000. It was named after HMS Ajax, a famous Royal Naval Cruiser that served in the Second World War. It got its name and status as a town after the War. Before that it was just a rural area around the village of Pickering.
At the time of the war, this area was chosen as the site for a factory where ammunition shells were filled. By the end of the war 40,000,000 of these shells had been filled by 9,000 people, who settled in the area. After the war, the factory was turned into an Engineering Faculty and part of Toronto University. Most of the students enrolled were discharged soldiers. The first batch of 7,000 engineering students graduated in 1949.
By the mid 1950s the Faculty had been moved away, but the little settlement had by then gained enough impetus to go forward on its own and it became a proper town with its own municipality.
